Sightseeing in Bamiyan

Sightseeing in Bamiyan is one of the favorite pastimes of the people visiting this place. Sightseeing in Bamiyan lets you know a lot about the culture and the history of the city .

Bamiyan, with its archeological remains, is the most noticeable tourist site of Afghanistan. The village lies about 2500 meters above sea level, 240 kilometers west of Kabul and attracts thousand of visitors annually.

The exquisite beauty of this valley is girdled by the snow capped range of the Kohe Baba Mountains in the south and by the steep cliffs in the north in which massive images of Buddha are carved. The pastel colors of its surroundings give visitors an impression of the magnificence and splendor of nature.

The area of Bamiyan developed under Kanishka the Great to become a major commercial and religious center and the smaller statue of Buddha (38 meters high) was built during his reign.

Two centuries later the colossal Buddha statue (55 meters high) was carved. Thousands of ornamented caves, inhabited by yellow robed monks, extended into Folladi and Kakrak valleys where a smaller statue of Buddha (6.5 meters) stands.

Pilgrims from all around the world pour into Bamiyan to admire its spectacular and sacred sites. Bamiyan fell to the Islamic conquerors in the 9th Century

The ruined Buddha is one of the major reason because of which a lot of people visit Bamiyan. It was created in the 6th century. This Buddha statue was once the largest in the world and a holy site for Buddhists.

Over the last few centuries they were slowly damaged by various invaders, and in 2001 the Taliban declared them 'un-Islamic', rolled in tanks and destroyed them completely. All that remains are the 'footprints'.

The area around the ruined Buddha is a very interesting place to visit. Many of the buildings were destroyed in war and there are occasional leftover weapons and destroyed jeeps, one of which is now used as a bridge over a stream.

The Shahr-e Gholghola is a fort high above the town. The fort offers some of the best views of the entire valley of Bamiyan. The Shahr-e Zohak is another fort some 20 kilometers towards Kabul that requires a mode of transportation to get to. The Band-e Amir is said to be the most beautiful lakes in Bamiyan.

With the myriad of Sightseeing in Bamiyan, it continues to attract thousands of tourists each year.
