Tourists can easily reach Balkh from the provincial capital Mazar-e Sharif. For this they need to take a bus or a shared taxi. The buses are quite comfortable and the rates are also reasonable. Travelers can also avail the shared taxis. As you travel by these taxis you can see the rugged landscape and the beautiful countryside. Some tourists even sit on the open boot of these taxis.
If you are coming from the capital Kabul by driving your own car then take the Salang Pass. Need not to worry about the road as the road has been improved and thus you will face no problem in traveling through this road. You take only 5 hours to reach Mazar-e-Sharif from Kabul and from here you can hire a car or can take a shared taxi to reach the ancient city of Balkh.
Travelers can also take the Mercedes buses from Kabul and reach Mazar-e-Sharif within 8 to 9 hours. These buses leave around 4 to 5AM and arrive Mazar-e-Sharif around 1 to 3PM. The buses are extremely cozy and provide travelers with comfort and luxury. The rates are also not very high.
Getting to Balkh by Air
Tourists who want to get in to Balkh by air need not worry as there are direct flights from Kabul to the provincial capital Mazar-e-Sharif. As you arrive in the airport you can hire a car and reach the city within a short period of time. The major airlines are Kam Air, Balkh Airlines and Ariana flights.
