The Transportation in Mazar-e Sharif features well connected roads to Herat to the west, to Kabul in the south-east and to Uzbekistan to the north. The name of Mazari Sharif means ‘Noble Shrine,’ which is located in the city center and features beautiful blue tiles. This shrine is the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib who was the Prophet Muhammad's son-in-law and cousin. Majority of the people of Mazar-e Sharif speak Persian and the city has a population of Tajik majority. While Sightseeing in Mazar-e Sharif, visit the Muslim and Hellenistic archeological sites. The main Attraction in Mazar-e Sharif is the Shrine of Ali. This shrine dominates the city. Apart from this Mazar-e Sharif Attraction you can see the sights of Balkh.

The Shrine of Hazrat Ali is situated in a spacious courtyard. It is decorated by a mosaic of blue tiling. The main portal faces the south which leads to the tomb featuring twin domes. But very little of this Attraction of Mazar-e Sharif remains as the original Timurid building has changed with constant rebuilding and renovation. The tilings of the shrine are of the mid 20th century which was made by the Herat Friday Mosque’s tile workshop.

This gorgeous shrine is preserved in an excellent condition. It is one of the country’s best preserved monuments. To the west of the shrine and within the complex is the tomb of Amir Sher Ali who was Dost Mohammed's son and successor. To the south of the shrine is the tomb of Wazir Akbar Khan who was the other son of Dost Mohammed.

This shrine is the most popular site for Sightseeing in Mazar-e Sharif. You will see that the shrine is home to hundreds of white pigeons. This Mazar-e Sharif shrine is the center of Nauroz celebration of the city. A huge religious banner is raised and flown on March 21. This banner flies for forty days which celebrates the arrival of spring. The season is marked by the Gul Surkh festival and buzkashi games. After forty days the banner is lowered and the 'Red Blossom' or Gul Surkh festival is celebrated when the surrounding areas are filed with red tulip blooms.
