History of Mazar-e Sharif

Mazar-e Sharif facts inform that the city is the capital of the Balkh Province, with its population being dominated by the Tajiks. Despite this, there are very significant Uzbek, Hazara, Turkmen and Pashtun minorities as a result of resettlement programmes by Abdur Rahman Khan in the 1800s. There is a dream which is related to the foundation of the city, in the 1100s where a local mullah dreamt that the Prophet's cousin and son-in-law with one of the four rightly guided Caliphs apparently revealed that he had been buried secretly near Balkh. Here after investigation, the Seljuk Sultan ordered a shrine to be built in the precincts. During Soviet rule Mazar-e Sharif was a base for the operations of the Soviet army, who used its airport to launch attacks on the mujahideen. After the withdrawal of Soviet Union from Afghanistan, Mazar-e-Sharif fell into the hands of the Uzbek and Tazik militants and still later it was taken over by the Taliban. Now the Mazari province is in full control of the Afghan central government.
