Bamiyan, a small town in the central part of Afghanistan, is the capital of Bamiyan province. It is located 240 kilometers away from the capital city of Afghanistan, Kabul, towards the northwest. Bamiyan is the largest town in Hazarajat region.

The Shahr-e-Golgola, Bamiyan served the town's main citadel which protected the Bamiyan Valley. The ruins of the citadel is located 2 kilometers away from Bamiyan. The citadel got destroyed when Genghis Khan visited the country during 1221. History has it that during the rule of the Shansabani king in Bamiyan, the citadel was thought to be invincible. Genghis Khan, a Mongol by descent, wanted to capture the citadel. The daughter of the Shansabani king betrayed her city when her father refused to accept her suitor. In anger she revealed to the Mongols how to capture the citadel. She told them of an underground spring where the defenders hid. Gengis Khan invaded the citadel and executed the king's daughter for betraying her country and father. The Mongols wreaked so much havoc in the town that the citadel came to be called the City of Screams or Shahr-e-Golgola.

The ruins of the Shahr-e Zohak or the Red City is situated at the confluence of the Kalu and Bamiyan rivers. In earlier days it served as a citadel. The citadel was built in 12th century by the Shansabani Kings.When the Mongols invaded the country, Gengis Khan's grandson died during an attack on the Shahr-e Zohak.. To avenge his death Gengis Ghan murdered the people of the Bamiyan valley. The ruins of the citadel are located on a mountain. You can get to this site by entering through the eastern part of the citadel. Shahr-e Zohak is situated 17 kilometers away from Bamiyan, towards the east. According to archaeologists there used to be fort at the site of the Shahr-e Zohak in the 6th century during the rule of the White Huns.
