Bamiyan is home to the country's greatest wonder, the spectacular lakes of Band-e Amir, Bamiyan. The lakes situated at an elevation of 3000 meters above sea-level, are tucked amidst the Koh-e Baba range of the majestic Hindu Kush mountains in Yakawlang district. Each of the lakes of Band-e Amir, Bamiyan is encircled by a high wall made of limestone deposits. The water in the lakes have a high concentration of minerals. The lakes bear different colors as the day proceeds from dawn to noon to dusk. The topography of the region surrounding the lakes is marked by Maastrichitan carbonate cliffs and rock avalanches. Shahr-e-Golgola, Bamiyan
The Shahr-e-Golgola, Bamiyan used to be the town's main citadel. It served to protect the Bamiyan Valley. The ruins of the citadel is located 2 kilometers away from Bamiyan. In 1221 Genghis Khan destroyed the citadel. History has it that during the rule of the Shansabani king in Bamiyan, the citadel was thought to be invincible both by enemies and defenders. Genghis Khan, a Mongol by descent, intended to capture the invincible citadel. The daughter of the Shansabani king revealed to the Mongols that there was an underground spring where the defenders hid. The princess was angry with his father when he refused to accept her suitor. Gengis Khan invaded the citadel and executed the king's daughter for betraying her country and father. The Mongols wreaked so much havoc in the town that the citadel came to be called the City of Screams or Shahr-e-Golgola.
