This beautiful shrine was constructed in 1428 by the Timurid ruler Shah Rukh. The entrance to the Gazar Gah in Herat has a massive 30 meters high portal. The eiwan is decorated in Timurid-style and has a distinct Chinese feature.
Ansari’s tomb is constructed with lovely blue marble which are carved with verses of his poetry. The Gazar Gah, Herat tomb overlooks an intricately carved pillar. There is also an ilex tree which is revered by Herati women as a place for blessings for women wishing to conceive. The north wall of the shrine at Gazar Gah, Herat has an elaborately carved tomb. This tomb is of one of the sons of Sultan Baiqara which is made of black marble and is decorated with Haft Qalam ('Seven Pens') style.
You can see the tomb and also the tomb of the great amir Dost Mohammed outside the Haft Qalam. There are a number of interesting buildings outside the Gazar Gah, Herat shrine. Near the entrance of this Herat Attraction is Khana Zarnegar which is a small domed building. This building was earlier used by Sufi dervishes as a retreat. Another attraction near the shrine is Hauz-e Zamzam. This is a covered well which was built by Shah Rukh. It contains water from the sacred well of Zamzam in Mecca. You can visit the 12-sided 17th century pavilion of Namakdan which has excellent views of the city.
