Musalla Complex, Herat

Musalla Complex, Herat is one of the important Tourist Attractions in Herat. Herat city is situated in the western part of Afghanistan. The country is situated in the central part of Asia. The city is located in the Herat province in the valley of the Hari River. The river flows from the central Afghanistan mountains to the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan. Herat is the third largest city in the country and is also rich in history. The Herat Tours will take you to see Musalla Complex, Herat.

For Traveling to Herat you can go by bus or car by highways or take a flight to the Herat Airport. There are numerous historic buildings in the city and the Citadel, Herat majestically dominates the city. It was known as the Pearl of Khorasan during the Middle Ages. Herta was one of the important Khorasan cities.

The Musalla Complex, Herat is also known as 'Prayer Ground' in Arabic. It was one of the accomplishments of Timurid Herat. This Herat Attraction was commissioned around 1417. This huge complex featured a madrasa, a Friday Mosque and mausoleum. The mausoleum is decorated with excellent mosaic tile works with thirty minarets. The Musalla Complex in Herat survived the turbulent history of the city. Unfortunately in 1885 it was dynamited by the British to provide a clear field of fire. It was done so that the British could face the Russian advance on the country. The six minarets, Gohar Shad's mausoleum and a smaller madrasa were all left of the Musalla Complex, Herat. These were further damaged by Soviet bombardment and earthquakes.

Robert Byron was encaptured by the beautiful tilings when he came here in the 1930’s. The tilings have all gone now and the minarets are bare which look like chimneys. The only hints of the tantalizing beauty are the few tiles left on the minarets. The Gohar Shad's Mausoleum in the Musalla Complex, Herat features a blue ribbed dome. It has only one remaining minaret. It faces the four leaning minarets of the Sultan Baiqara Madrasa.

The walls of the Musalla Complex, Herat have been repaired. In 2001 a huge rehabilitation project was undertaken and over 9000 trees were planted with irrigation canals. In 2004 the tile workshop of the Friday Mosque undertook a project to restore the Gohar Shad's mausoleum.
