The town has made its presence felt in history many a times.

As compared to the other parts of the country, almost all citizens of the town of Balkh can speak in English. There are various English schools/lessons and computer courses are also taught to the people. Getting to Balkh, Afghanistan is very convenient. Balkh, Afghanistan is packed with various attractions for the tourists. The town is entirely enclosed by its year old fortifications. This is built of brick and mud walls that stand at least 30 feet high and are in good condition still today. These fort walls can be climbed upon and they offer wonderful views of the countryside and the town from here.

At the north end of the town, there is another larger mound that was also a fortress. The walls of this fortress slope on the outside and are upright on the inside. This structure gives an impression of being very tall when watched from the inside. The turrets along the walls are in the stage of decay and provide glimpses of building techniques.

The town of Balkh houses a central park, where you will find children playing soccer or volleyball. At one end of the park stand the ruins of a tiled mosque and the other the gate of a madrassa. The construction technique of the madrassa can be studied here. As the park has many trees and small shops surrounding it thus part it is difficult for the tourists to take photos of the madrassa.

The Shrine of Khoja Abu Nasar Parsa, which is also known as Bala Hasa dominates the park in the center of the town. This 15th century shrine was built in the Timurid style. The Dargah of Rabia Balkhi, the famous Persian poet is situated adjacent to the Parsa shrine.
