The continent of Africa is unique and special in terms of the rich treasure trove of flora and fauna that is everywhere in the surface, the ancient heritage, the inhabitants, their colorful costumes and eating habits, and also the numerous customs and rituals that surround the Fairs and festivals of this place. New Year in Africa is one such festival that is enjoyed throughout the continent.

The different regions of the African continent observe the New Year day, differently. While the South Africans are more westernized in the manner in which they party and rejoice the New Year, people in North Africa are more traditional in their style and approach towards this festival. Therefore there is a colorful diversity to the celebrations of New Year in Africa.

In the Maghreb region in North Africa, New Year’s Eve is celebrated on the 12th of January. The countries in this region celebrate this day as a public holiday and apart from merry making, the traditional couscous meal consisting of plenty of Chicken holds prime importance in the celebration. It is however believed that the food must not be very spicy or bitter, as that will denote a sweet and progressive year ahead. It also is a means to celebrate good harvest and pray for even better yields the following year.

In other parts of Africa like Ethiopia, celebrations do not begin until September as they observe the New Year day then.

In South Africa however, this day is celebrated on the 1st of January lending a different meaning to the New Year in Africa. The first day of the Gregorian calendar is a much-awaited event here and accounts to much feasting and merry making. The entire nation is illuminated with multicolored lights and fire works are in display everywhere.

Places like the Cape Town throngs with locals and tourist alike who flock to witness the famous Minstrel Carnival parade. In other areas like Victoriav and Alfred waterfront, light works, fireworks and many theme parties involving plenty of dancing and singing welcome the New Year.

Another feather to the cap of New Year celebrations in Africa are the pristine beaches, which organizes many parties specially attended by the tourists. With the sea and your loved ones for company, nothing can be more heavenly than this in welcoming the New Year.
