The wildlife in Albania is rich and varied. There is a very little part of Albania is completely without vegetation. The forests in the country covers more than one-third of the total area. Just like the abundant Wildlife in Albania, the plant life is also very rich. The coastal lowlands of Albania are characterized by Mediterranean shrubs such as laurel and myrtle.
In the earlier days of Albania, the old customs of weapon carrying and unrestricted shooting took a heavy toll of Albanian wildlife. Taking into account the fast disappearance of the animals, the hunting laws have been introduced. The nature preserves have also been established to protect the remaining species of animals like jackals, wolves, and foxes and the even rarer wild boars, bears, and chamois.
The mild and favorable coastal climate of Albania attracts great numbers of migratory birds, such as swallows, storks, ducks, geese, and pelicans. The Sardines and mullet are among the fishes that swim Albanian coastal waters. The trouts are found in the streams and lakes of the mountains.
The mountainous topography also produces various species of flora and fauna. The dry lowlands of Albania are occupied by a bush-shrub association known as maquis. There are few wild animals that reside in the mountains. The wild birds still abound in the lowland forests.
There is some 29 percent of Albanian region that is forested with the mixed stands of elm, pine, willow, poplar, oak, and white beech trees. Many of the forests near transportation routes have been profoundly logged and some have given way to sheep pastures. The soil is either washed or blown away during the summer drought. Even in the humid months the grass grows sparsely in clumps. It is because of heavy grazing by livestock in the summer and the summer drought, much of Albania is critical for wildlife. The Wolves, deer, and boars of the region have been pushed back into the most remote forests. The sanctuaries and natural reserves have now been established to take care of the endangered species. The wild fowl, however, are abundant in lowland forests areas.
