This town has been populated from the ancient ages. The many burial mounts in the district suggest that the first settlement was at around 8th century.
Burrel, Albania was once upon a time one of the prisons during the communist rule. Many famous political prisoners were imprisoned in this place. It was once upon a time a place for the miners. The mines have however closed down. There is still a ferrochrome factory that is in working condition in the town. The most important attraction in the town is the history museum of the Mati. Some of the natural spots near the town are: Zall Gjocaj National Park, Ulza Lake and Shkopeti gorge.
