Algeria, the second largest country in Africa, shares its borders with Tunisia towards the northeast, Niger in the southeast, Libya towards the east, Mali and Mauritania towards the southwest, Morocco and Western Sahara towards the west. Many festivals and events are celebrated in Algeria which are based on religious, cultural or political themes. The country celebrates its Independence Day on 5 th July. In 1962 Algeria became independent from French rule. On 1st November, the people celebrate Revolution Day. On 1 st November, 1954, revolutionaries belonging to the National Liberation Front in Algeria attacked public facilities, French military bases and communication buildings. National Day is celebrated on 19th June. In the year 1965, on this very day Mohammed Ben Bella was defeated in a coup'detat and his rule in Algeria came to an end.

Algeria Festivals and Events: Religious Festivals in Algeria

The majority of the population of Algeria consists of Sunni Muslims. Religious festivals are celebrated in accordance to the lunar calendar. On 11 th April, Mouloud or the birth of Prophet Mohammed is celebrated. The other religious festivals celebrated in Algeria are Ramadan, Eid al Adha, Islamic New Yaer, Muharram, Eid al Fitr.

Muharram in Algeria

Muharram is considered as the first month according to the Islamic Calendar. On this day the Algerian Sunni Muslims fast on the ninth day or eleventh day of the Muharram month. The Muharram month is revered as a sacred month.

Eid al Adha in Algeria

Eid al Adha, one of the major Festivals and Events in Algeria, is celebrated on the tenth day of Dhul Hijja, according to the lunar calendar. It falls in the month of January. The festival commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son's life when ordered by Allah. The celebrations continue for 2 to 3 days. It is celebrated 70 days after the Ramadan month. Eid al Adha is considered as bigger Eid. It falls after the day when Muslims who have gone to Mecca for Hajj descend from Mount Arafat.

Ramadan in Algeria

Ramadan is the ninth month in Islamic Calendar when observant Muslims fast during the daytime. They rise up early before dawn and have Suhoor meal and offer their prayers. During sunset they break their fast with the fourth prayer of the day.

Eid ul- Fitr in Algeria

Eid ul- Fitr, one of the popular festivals in Algeria, marks the end of month of Ramadan. It falls in month of October. The festival goes on for 3 days. During these 3 days people engage themselves in philanthropic activities like giving money and clothes to poor people. The celebrations are marked by feasting.
