The city of Algiers is positioned on the west side of a bay of the Mediterranean Sea. The name of the city is derived from the Arabic word al-jaz?'ir. This word translates as the islands and refers to the four islands which are situated off the city's coast before becoming a part of the mainland in the year 1525. Algiers is the only city of Algeria with an English name and that is different from its French name.

The modern section of the city is built on the level ground by the seashore whereas the old part, the ancient city of the deys, climbs the steep hill behind the modern town and is crowned by the casbah or citadel.

The Monument of the Martyrs or the Monument des Martyrs is an iconic concrete monument that is built in memory of the Algerian war for independence. This monument was opened in the year 1982 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Algeria's independence. The monument is fashioned in the shape of three standing palm leaves which shelter the "Eternal Flame". A soldier stands at the edge of each palm leaf representing a stage of Algeria's struggle.

The El Jedid mosque situated near the port is another important spot of sightseeing in the city.
