Batna, Algeria is the main city of Batna Province in Algeria and is also regarded as one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Algeria. Batna, Algeria has a population of 285.800 according to the 2004 estimation. This makes it the fifth largest city in Algeria. Batna is also one of the major cities of the Chaoui area and is also the capital of the Aures.
French garrison erected the first solid foundations (military camp) of the city in the year 1844. This was done with a strategic mission to create a permanently guarded access point for the main Sahara road. The geographical location of the city of Batna offers a natural break through the Atlas Mountains. This passage was not detected by the early Romans in their early invasion phase. The ancient cities of Timgad and Lambese were built around the First Century. These buildings are the living examples of the significance that the Romans gave to commerce control over the region.
Batna in Algeria is positioned in the north east of Algeria and is not far from Constantine and the Tunisian border. The town has progressively more broadened in the last 15 years. Some of the other attractive places worth seeing are Timgad, Balcons de Ghoufi, Lambese (also called Lambaesis), Chelaalaa, and Belezma National Park.
