The Sanctuary of Meritxell is another popular tourist destination in Canillo. Thousands of pilgrims visit Meritxell on 8th September every year, which is also the national day of the Valleys of Andorra. There is a legend that says that the image of the Virgin of Meritxell was found amidst plants during winter by some faithful people. When it was taken to Canillo, it disappeared, only to be found at the same spot where it was originally found. After three time of this happening, the sanctuary of Our Lady of Meritxell was constructed at the place. The church was almost burnt in the fire of 1972, and was completely rebuild.
