History of Andorra

Andorra is one of the most remarkable countries of Europe. Andorra is bordered by Spain. The history of Andorra is full of conflicts and settlements. It is said that the natives of this country were granted a charter by Charles the Great (Charlemagne) in return to their fight against the Moors. After that, the control of the place went to the local count of Urgell and eventually to the bishop of the diocese of Urgell. Know the whole history of Andorra before your travel.

Andorra history is full of disputes. In the eleventh century, a dispute arose between the bishop and his northern neighbor over Andorra. The conflict was resolved in the year 1278 by the signing of a pareage. According to the pareage, Andorra's sovereignty would be shared between the count of Foix and the bishop of La Seu d'Urgell, in Catalonia, Spain. This gave the then small principality of Andorra its territory and political form.

The history of Andorra points out its annexation. Andorra was twice annexed to the Crown of Aragon, once in 1396 and next in 1512. Eventually, the title passed to the Navarre kings. In between 1812 and 1813, Andorra was annexed for yet another time and made part of the district of Puigcerda.

The history of Andorra also saw the emergence of France. In the year 1933, France occupied Andorra as a result of social unrest before elections. On July 12, 1934, an adventurer named Boris Skossyreff issued a proclamation in Urgell, declaring himself Boris I, the sovereign prince of Andorra. He declared a war on the bishop of Urgell. As a result, he was arrested by the Spanish authorities on July 20 and ultimately expelled from Spain.

From 1936 to 1940, a French detachment was garrisoned in Andorra to prevent influences of the Spanish Civil War and Franco's Spain on the history of Andorra.

The history of Andorra also witnessed a massive war in the course of time. Andorra declared a war on Imperial Germany during World War I. However, it did not actually participate in the fighting. It remained in an official state of belligerency until 1957, reason being it was not included in the Versailles Peace Treaty. During World War II, Andorra remained a neutral state.

The Politics in Andorra is indeed unique. Andorra is a co-principality with the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell. The Government of Andorra was nurtured in the framework of a parliamentary representative democracy. The economy in Andorra mainly rests on tourism.

The history of Andorra is very interesting and worth knowing.
