Lubango, Angola is the capital city of Angola and a major center of all political, economic and cultural activities of the country. It is also an important tourist destination in Angola. History of Lubango, Angola:
During the colonial period Lubango was known as Sa da Bandeira. The fertility of the land and its richness brought fifty five Boer families, who were Dorsland Trekkers, in the early years of the 1888’s. These trekkers settled in the land and tried to obtain the Portuguese citizenship. When Portugal refused them the rights to own land they returned. This excited one thousand settlers from the impoverished island of Madeira, which was a province of Portugal, to come to Lubango. These were group of farmers who thrived on subsistence farming. The development of railway lines brought in more immigrants. After the independence, the city was renamed as Lubango.
Transportation in Lubango:
Lubango is well connected with different parts of the country and the outside world by a well-developed means of transportation. It is connected by rail road and air. Lubango has a major airport which is named as Lubango Airport with the IATA code SDD. It is also the headquarters for a regiment of air bombers of the Angolian Air Force. The city is well served by the Benguela Railway and is the junction for trains to Chiange.
Lubango has a well-developed infrastructure for the promotion of tourism. With peace being restored it has already started drawing tourists with its natural, historical and cultural attractions. The civic authorities along with local entrepreneurs have started building up hotels and guests houses to accommodate the visitors in the city. The number of hotels in Lubango is also growing to provide accommodation to business travelers as well as visitors with diplomatic mission and friendship development.
