The country has been a leader in Latin American literature since becoming a fully united entity in the 1850s, with a strong constitution and a defined nation-building plan.
Cinema in Argentina has received international recognition. Movies such as such as The Official Story and 9 Queens have achieved major recognition all over the world. Even low budget productions are being praised by people the world over.
Argentineans choose films first based on their particular genre, rather than on advertising and have recently shown a preference for national films, which according to them have improved slightly. By contrast, theater is not popular here and is considered to be elitist. Only 10% of Argentineans attend and enjoy theater regularly and mostly focus on lighter comedy and musical shows.
The most popular element of Argentine culture is their music and dance, especially tango. Tango music is enjoyed in it own right in modern Argentina. It must be noted that while tango refers mostly to a particular dancing music for foreigners, the music together with the lyrics is what Argentine refer to as tango. Folk music and dance are popular here. Rock and roll is also widely appreciated in Argentina since the 1970s. 1990s saw the rise of numerous bands singing rock and roll music, reggae, and pop music.
During spare time, it has been found that the majority of Argentina's people visit friends and relatives. The people are considered to be social and outgoing and they view themselves too. Argentines do have strong opinions on many issues, and although they can be circumspect and reserved, they can also voice their opinions forthrightly or publicly.
