Echmiadzin, Armenia is a holy city and is the seat of Katholicos which is the head of Armenian Apostolic church. The origin of Echmiadzin, Armenia dates back to the 3rd century BC. Initially the place was known as Vardkesavan. It was the capital of the country and was an important city for a long time. The most important center of the town is the famous Echmiadzin Cathedral which is believed to be the oldest church in the world. Armenia was the only country in those times that had Christianity as the state religion. It was constructed by Saint Gregory. Initially the structure was a Bascilica. After a few years the wooden church in the Echmiadzin, Armenia was demolished and a new stone church came up in its place. This was constructed by the Roman governor of the place. There are massive pillars in the church that are connected to the outer walls by a number of arcades. There are beautiful murals that adorn the interiors of the structure. The church had an excellent collection of some medieval manuscripts of the country.

The gate of St. Tiridates is situated at the western end of the Echmiadzin Cathedral in Echmiadzin, Armenia. There are many khachkars that are located close to the place. There is also a spiritual academy that is just a few kilometers away from the cathedral. There are also two ancient churches that are situated there. These are: The St. Gayane and St. Hripsime. The two churches, the cathedral and the site of Zvartnots are listed as world heritage sites. Besides these historical monuments, the town is also well known for its many natural surroundings.
