South Asia is popularly known as the Indian Subcontinent. The term Indian subcontinent describes those regions that lie on the Indian Plate, bordered on the north by the Eurasian Plate. South Asia in other words is not only referred to the countries in and around India but also other countries which are in close proximity to it. For instance, Afghanistan is also grouped in this region due to its ties with neighboring Pakistan. Thus, South Asia can broadly be classified which includes the continents of Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
The people of this region are known to have their unique distinct characteristics. The dominant people and culture of the region are Indo Aryan and Dravidian. You will also find a mix of Persian, Turkish and Arab cultural traditions that form an important part of Islamic South Asian culture.
Asia is one of the most densely populated regions in the world. One fifth of the world's population is known to reside here. Most people in the region either follow Hinduism or are know to follow Islam.
South Asia has a rich and strong history. Ancient civilizations were known to develop in the Indus Valley and the Dwaraka region. During the rule of the Mughal Empire during the 18th century, the region flourished. Under the Europeans, trade and expansion had flourished in the region. Parts of South Asia were ruled by Portugal and Holland, and later Britain and France to a lesser extent. Most of South Asia however gained independence from the Europeans by the late 1940s.
Among the countries in South Asia, India has developed and continues to develop at a tremendous rate. India boasts of the third largest population in the world and is a strong contributor to the world economy. The country of Pakistan, a predominantly Muslim populated country is rich in minerals. Sri Lanka on the southern tip is known for its beautiful beaches and tea plantations. Bangladesh lying to the East of India is known a popular fishing destination and its coastline.
