Hobart is the capital city of Tasmania. It is the oldest city in Australia after Sydney and is place of immense historical importance. Hobart has several flavors to it, from a nature lover’s haven to a bustling metropolitan city.
The convicts, Whalers and colonial traders who frequented the waterfront were the first ones to settle in Hobart as early as 1804. The footmarks of this past are still embedded in the historical landmarks of the city. A tour of Hobart will reveal the colonizer’s tyranny on the convicts. This is clearly visible in the past era's criminal courts, penitentiary and execution yards. Some of the landmarks of this city that provide an old world charm include St. David's Cathedral, Franklin Square which looks like a giant chess board, Theatre Royal, the oldest operating theatre in Australia, Cascade Brewery, the oldest in Australia and Anglesea Barracks, the oldest in-use military establishment in Australia. Chocolate lovers can pamper their taste buds at the Cadbury Schweppes Chocolate Factory.
Hobart also has a dash of modernism along with its colonial history. The Wrest Point casino is the first prominent feature of Hobart skyline that displays the adventures in Antarctica. One of Hobart’s landmarks is the Cats and Fiddle Arcade which is located off Elizabeth Street and features an animated clock which acts out the Cat and the Fiddle nursery rhyme on the hour.
A tour of Hobart must include the annual Sydney- Hobart boat race. This is the largest boating event in the Southern Hemisphere. The other two events that are certainly not to be missed include Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Show and the Hobart Summer Festival.
