World Heritage Sites in Australia

There are many World Heritage Sites in Australia; the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations has attributed this honor to 16 sites in Australia. Some of the popular Kakadu National Park, Fraser Island, Great Barrier Reef and Purnululu National Park.


Located 250 kms east of the city of Darwin, Kakadu National Park, covers 20,000 square kms. It is a major tourist attraction that draws tourists with its wide variety of flora and fauna as well as its towering escarpment containing aboriginal rock art. One of the highlight of the place is definitely its fauna; here you can see animals like crocodiles, wallabies, dingos, goannas and countless species of birds. Camping tours and safari tours to the park is extremely popular with the tourists. One of the favorite activities in the park is bushwalking and you can also opt for fishing in places like Sandy Billabong and Jim Jim Billabong and waters west of the Kakadu Highway.

The largest sand island of the world, Fraser Island is renowned for its dingos, wildlife, native birds, rainforests, creeks, lakes, fishing, and spectacular natural beauty. It is located in Queensland and is only a three and half hours drive from north of Brisbane. The island features splendid sand dune systems, rainforests on sand, and beautiful freshwater lakes. One of the specialties of the place is that it is the only sand island on Earth that houses rainforests, nestling a wide spectrum of indigenous flora and fauna. The tourists are fascinated by the long sandy beaches, the numerous lakes and creeks, the sprawling rainforests and the wildlife, of the island.

The largest coral reef in the world, the Great Barrier Reef covers almost 20 % of the reef area of Earth. Washed by the South-West Pacific Ocean, it is located parallel to the coast of Queensland and it has still retained its pristine condition. It comprises of 2 900 individual reefs, 71 coral islands, 10 000 species of sponge, 350 different species of coral, 4 000 species of mollusks, 350 species of echinoderms and over 1 500 species of fish. Infact the reef is also home to some of the endangered animal species like Green Sea Turtle and Dugong and it is also the breeding site for humpback whales.

Situated in Western Australia, in the East Kimberly region, Purnululu National Park is one of the most visited and enthralling geological landmarks in the state as well as the country. The Purnululu National Park is a haven for wildlife lovers and is home to varieties of flora and fauna. The park also features some rare and endangered species like rainbow bee-eaters, nailtail and rock wallaby. The major attraction in the Purnululu National Park is the Bungle Bungle Range, which is spread over 45 000 hectares.

Besides these there are also other World Heritage Sites in the country that include Heard Island and McDonald Islands, Macquarie Island, Tasmanian Wilderness, Australian fossil mammal sites, Lord Howe Island, Central-Eastern Rainforest Reserves of Australia and Shark Bay.
