Wildlife in Austria

Wildlife in Austria includes many places and forests that the tourists would definitely like. Wildlife in Austria includes many animals and species that are rarely seen. These are enjoyed by the tourists very much specially by those who love wildlife adventures.

Wildlife in Austria includes zoos and sanctuaries. It includes Tiergarten Schonbrunn which is a zoo situated on the grounds of the renowned Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna in Austria. Tiergarten Schönbrunn was founded as an imperial menagerie in 1752 and it is the oldest zoo in the world.

Tiergarten Schonbrunn includes exotic Wildlife in Austria featuring hippopotamus and Penguins. The Hippopotamus is semi aquatic animal that live in rivers and lakes in large groups of up to 40 hippos. During the day they remain cool by staying in the water or mud. Their reproduction and childbirth both happen in water where territorial bulls preside over a stretch of river. They come out at dusk to graze on grass. While hippos rest near each other in territories in the water, grazing is a solitary activity and hippos are not protective on land.

Tiergarten Schonbrunn also has Penguins. The Penguins are excellently adapted to a marine environment. Their wings have become flippers, ineffective for flight in the air. In the water, the penguins are amazingly nimble. Within the smooth plumage a layer of air is preserved, ensuring optimism. The air layer also helps insulate the birds in cold waters. The penguins use their tails and wings to maintain balance for their upright stance on the land.

All penguins have a white underside and are mostly black on the upper side. This is for mask. A predator looking up from below such as an orca or a leopard seal will have difficulty in distinguishing between a white penguin belly and the reflective water surface. The dark plumage on their backs hides them from above.

Wildlife in Austria also includes Red Squirrel. Red squirrels are tree lodging omnivorous rodents that are frequently found throughout Eurasia. It is the long tail that helps the squirrel to balance and turn when jumping from tree to tree and running along branches and also keep the animal warm during sleep.
