Christmas in Austria tops the chart when it comes to festivals in Austria. It is the most important festival of the Austrians. You can find "Christkindlmärkte" on nearly every corner of most Austrian cities. These markets start selling special Christmas goods from the beginning of November till the Christmas Day. There are small huts which provide you with potential Christmas presents, food and most important hot punch and "Glühwein", sweet and heated mulled wine.

Christmas is followed by the arrival of New Year in Austria. At midnight you will hear famous Pummerin (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) strike! Just before midnight you can watch the official fireworks, which are supported by considerable private efforts that illuminate all corners of Austria.

You can start the New Year with the ball season. The tradition of balls is deeply rooted in the Austrian History and this time of the year is awaited with much enthusiasm. Between January and February, when it is "Fasching", the Austrian Carnival, balls are held nearly every weekend in different locations of the countryr. To attend a ball you should at least know how to waltz, which is an obligatory to this formal dance event.

Vienna City Marathon is an important event in Austria. Each year in the last weekend of May, this Marathon takes you on a 42 km long sightseeing tour through Vienna. Starting in front of the UNO Building it is leading it's runners throughout the City of Vienna, past the most interesting cultural districts and buildings. Vienna International Festival - Wiener Festwochen is celebrated each year between May and June. Ever since 1951 the Vienna International Festival has managed to provoke artistic and social discourse while maintaining a high artistic level.

Vienna Film Festival on the Rathausplatz is yet another important event in Austria. Every night a different film connected to operas is presented on the colossal screen. There is no entrance fee and a collection of different international cuisines is always ready to tantalize your taste buds.
