Golden Roof, Innsbruck

Golden Roof, Innsbruck is one of the most important historical sites in the Old Town of Innsbruck. You can start exploring the tourist attractions in Innsbruck with the Golden Roof in Innsbruck. Previously the Golden Roof was known as "Neuhof", which means New Court. In the early 15th century Golden Roof, Innsbruck was constructed by Archduke Friedrich IV as the dwelling of the Tirolean royals.

Golden Roof, Innsbruck is a three-storey building which is situated right in the middle of the Old Town of Innsbruck. The Golden Roof is crowned with 2,600 tiles which are coated with copper and it took 14 kilograms of gold in order to renovate the building. According to a myth, Golden Roof in Innsbruck was established in the year 1400 for Lord Friedrich. He initially enclosed the Golden Roof with gold to oppose the gossip that he was underprivileged. Actually the Golden Roof was established for Emperor Maximilan, who imparted a balcony to it in 1501. He did so for it to assist as a "royal box" where he could sit with comfort and relish shows held in the square below. In early 18th century the structure was changed and extended.

Emperor Maximilan is depicted in the two inner graved panels on the gallery. On the left side of the gallery the emperor is portrayed with his first and second wives-Maria of Burgundy and Bianca Maria Sforza of Milan. On the right side of the gallery he is portrayed with a consultant and a court jester. The railing on the first floor is decked with marvelous coats of artillery representing places such as Austria, Hungary, Burgundy, Milan, The Holy Roman Empire, Styria, Tyrol and magnificent Germany. The master copies are exhibited at Ferdinandeum Museum.

Golden Roof in Innsbruck is remains open Monday to Sunday from 10 in the morning till 6 in the evening during the months of May to September. From October to April it remains open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 in the morning till 5 in the evening.
