The castle has an interesting history. This was called Ostrovica around 860 because of its Slovenian origin. From 1209 to the end of 16th century the castle suffered many disturbances such as Turkish invasion and others. But it was in 1541 when Emperor Ferdinand I bestowed Hochosterwitz upon governor Christof Khevenhüller. In 1571 again the castle was ultimately purchased by Baron George Khevenhüller. Since then the castle is under the possession of the Khevenhüller family and no major changes took place.

What to see in Burg Hochosterwitz, Klagenfurt

Tourists visiting this castle can see a lot of things. To have a clear picture of the castle visit between April and October as it is during this time when the castle remains open to the public. The things that you can see are:

A unique and massive armoury with 14 gates built between 1570 and 1586. What is noteworthy about the gates are that each of them uses different defense mechanism to seal them. This was done because of the Turkish invasion.

Tourists can also walk the 620 meter long pathway through the 14 gates up to the castle.

As you come to the castle yard you can see a marble plaque of 1576. On it is written a request.

Location and Route

The Burg Hochosterwitz, Klagenfurt is situated east of the town of Sankt Veit an der Glan, in Carinthia on a Dolomite rock. The castle is so big that you can have a glimpse of the castle from 30 kilometers away.
