The castle has an interesting history. This was called Ostrovica around 860 because of its Slovenian origin. But it was in 1541 when Emperor Ferdinand I bestowed Hochosterwitz upon governor Christof Khevenhüller. In 1571 again the castle was ultimately purchased by Baron George Khevenhüller.
