Magdalensberg, Klagenfurt

Magdalensberg, Klagenfurt is an ancient site which attracts many tourists. The Magdalensberg, Klagenfurt is the place where the remains of a Cento-Roma settlement of 1st century B.C. and also the first century A.D. have been excavated. The Magdalensberg, Klagenfurt is the oldest Roman settlement to be found north of the Alps.

One can reach Magdalensberg, Klagenfurt from Willensberg, which is north of Maria Saal, by a road journey of 6 km. Tourists can see the remains of the forum, villas and the workshops. One of the interesting sights is the temple site along with the foundations of the temple. Other remains include a senate building, baths and terraced houses. There are also interesting displays of marble, wooden and ceramic objects in the museum.

Magdalensberg in Klagenfurt is the Celto-Roman settlement site. The Romans came here to do trade in the century before the birth of Christ. The recent finding took place in 1502, when a farmer discovered a bronze statue which is now known as the Magdalensberg Youth and is on display in Vienna.

But the excavation work began in the late 19th century with the collectors mainly interested in finding valuable Roman art objects. But after Allied occupation of Austria after World War II, serious archaeological work began.

There is a celebration ritual with pagan origins, called the "Four Hills Pilgrimage" which starts from here every April. In this celebration, participants run over four hills with burning torches and has to be completed within 24 hours.

There is a shrine at the summit of the mountain, erected by the Austrians to honor two saints, Mary Magdalene and Helen. One can see the scenic view of the mountain ranges, including the Klagenfurt Basin.

There are tours conducted only from May to October, from 9am to 7pm daily.
