Salburger Dom, Salzburg is a famous place in Salzburg. This sightseeing attraction of Salzburg is surrounded by Residenz Castle and St Peter’s Abbey. The sight where the Salburger Dom, Salzburg is situated is a sacred place from the time of the Celtics and the Romans. The Dom of Salburger is said to be built under the supervision of St. Virgil, on the foundations made by St. Rupert. If you go by the historical record of Salburger Dom, Salzburg, then you would find that the earliest record of the Dom goes to the year 774. It was in this year that the relics of St. Rupert were transferred from St Peter’s Abbey to the Salburger Dom in Austria.

The Salburger Dom, Salzburg was built between the years 767 and 774 and was 66 meters long and 33 meters wide. During the time of its construction it was regarded as the largest sacral building in whole of Europe. The first renovation work for the Salburger Dom of Salzburg started during the time of Archbishop Arno and this renovation work lasted for almost 70 years till it suffered major damages due to lightning in the year 842. Again the reconstruction work began after three years. In the front façade of the Salburger Cathedral in Salzburg you would find three horizontal units which are covered with Untersberg mountain marble. In the front gate there are also four huge statues, one statue is of St Rupert holding a salt barrel and the other one is of St Virgil holding a church. The statue of St Peter holds a key and St Paul holds a sword.

There are some architectural features of Salburger Dom, Salzburg. The first one is a face on the mantelpiece of the main window. This face which can be seen making a grimace towards the Residenz, the main residence of the Archbishop signifies that the Abbot of St Peter’s can dare to make a face to Prince Archbishop. After you pass through the arches of the Salburger Dom of Salzburg, which are built by Giovanni Antonio Darios, you would find the statue of ‘The Cardinal’ under the northern arches. Another famous statue is that of Madonna made by Johann Baptist Hagenauer.

During the Salzburg Festival, you would find the Dom to be the place where ‘Jedermann’ is held and the façade of the cathedral is used for the dramatic scenery. In the months of November and December it becomes Christmas market and lots of tourists visit this place.
