One of the most visited Salzburg Tourist Attractions is the Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg. The city is a major tourist destination in Austria and Europe. The palace is a few minutes walk from the Old Town of Salzburg and is situated by a small lake with magnificent views of the Untersberg Mountain. The Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg is also the birthplace of the Salzburg Festival. The palace has been privately owned by the American educational institution Salzburg Global Seminar from 1947. The institution is known for addressing global issues for than 50 years. The palace is presently used for hosting seminars and special events and is also available for private accommodation too.
The history of the Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg goes back 270 years when the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, Leopold Anton Eleutherius Freiherr von Firmian constructed the palace for his residence. In 1736 the Prince Archbishop named his residence ‘Leopoldskorn’ which was the combination of his first name and the second part of his home town’s name of ‘Mezzocorone’. The word corone when translated into German means ‘Krone’ or crown.
He commissioned the Scottish Benedictine monk Bernhard Stuart to design this fabulous Rococo style palace. In 1744 the Archbishop died and the palace was left to his nephew Count Laktanz. The Count was a great connoisseur and collector of art and collected over 570 paintings of famous artist including Rembrandt, Titian, Ruben’s and Poussin. The Count was also one of the first patrons of Leopold Mozart and his son Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
In 1918, the Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg was restored by the famous theater director Max Reinhardt when he took over the palace. He restored the palace to its original splendor started the Salzburg Festival along with poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal and the composer Richard Strauss. During the war Max Reinhardt died in New York in 1943. After the War the palace was returned to the heirs of Max Reinhardt. During that time an Austrian named Clemens Heller and his friends who were studying at Harvard University asked for the palace from the widow of Max Reinhardt for organizing seminars.
The Great Hall of the Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg has a lovely fireplace. The 11 suites are well equipped with modern amenities. Visit the beautiful chapel where the heart of the Archbishop is buried. The Venetian Room is opulently decorated with handcrafted gold wall panels and mirrors. The White Room has intricate floral forms of light yellow and white stucco works. The main attraction is the two storied Marble Hall whose walls are filled with stories of the builder and philosophy. Other rooms to explore are the Max Reinhardt Library, McGowan Room and the beautiful Chinese Room with colorful tapestries.
