Schloss Mirabell, Salzburg is another attraction of Salzburg that is worth visiting. Schloss Mirabell, Salzburg is actually nothing but a garden and its surrounding walls. The Mirabell Gardens is an area which is not only a garden decorated with beautiful flowering plants but also comes with varieties of statues from ancient mythology. In the west side of the garden you would find a hedge theater- this is a place which is actually an open air stage and the walls and the area has the appearance of hedges. There is also a bird house in the garden.

Schloss Mirabell, Salzburg was built by the Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau for his concubine Salome Alt in the year 1606. The first walls that cover the Schloss Mirabell, Salzburg which is actually a palace originally known by the name of ‘Altenau’ by the Archbishop were built during the Thirty Year War by Archbishop Paris Lordon Graf.

During the years 1721 to 1724, this castle was redesigned by celebrated architect Hildebrandt. Only the angel staircases of the original structure remained which had stucco works by Raphael Donner. In the year 1818 there was a devastating fire and the Schloss Mirabell, Salzburg was almost completely devastated. Thus it was again rebuilt. With that fire the “Mirabellschwemme” was completely destroyed. This was actually a well for horses and attached to the castle. The structures of Pegasus, lions and unicorns that you can find in the garden of Schloss Mirabell, Salzburg were actually part of this well.

In the southern part of the Mirabell Castle you would find the chapel of the castle. This was completely remodeled after 1818. Here you would find a central hall with a round apsis and a vaulted ceiling. The altar of the church dates back to the year 1722. Here you would find the statues of various saints such as Augustinus, Rupert, Virgil and Martin.

Today, you would find the Schloss Mirabell in Salzburg housing the office of the Mayor of Salzburg and the Town Council. The Marble Hall of the Schloss Mirabell, Salzburg is actually a renowned place for wedding receptions and almost every evening you would find concerts hosted here.
