Sebastianfriedhof, Salzburg

One of the most visited Salzburg Tourist Attractions is Sebastianfriedhof, Salzburg. It is a cemetery and is connected to the beautiful St.Sebastian’s Church. Salzburg is a must visit destination if you are coming to Austria. It is located on the banks of the Salzach River and is on the northern boundary of the Alps Mountains. The Old Town of Salzburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its numerous historical palaces, castles and churches. The Sebastianfriedhof, Salzburg is a must visit if you love architecture and history.

The Sebastianfriedhof, Salzburg was built by the Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau. It was built from 1795 to 1600 by Andrea Berteleto in the Italian campo santo style to replace the old cemetery. Many prominent Austrian personalities and merchant families are buried here. Some of the famous people buried at the Sebastianfriedhof, Salzburg are Wolfgang's wife Constanze as well as her second husband, Georg Nikolas von Nissen, her aunt Genovefa von Weber who was the mother of the composer Carl Maria von Weber, Mozart's father Leopold and Elia Castello, builder of the Gabriel Chapel.

One beautiful thing to see is the magnificent Gabriel Chapel with the mausoleum of the Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich. The chapel and tomb is in the center of the cemetery and bears witness to the philosophy and authority of the former sovereign, the Prince Archbishop. There is also the tomb of Paracelsus who was the famous natural scientist and philosopher.

The St. Sebastian`s Church beside the Sebastianfriedhof, Salzburg was erected from 1505 to 1512 by Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach. The church was built on the site of the old late Gothic church. The church is one of the most beautiful Baroque churches with colonnaded hall. Franz Anton Danreiter and the Tyrolese architect Kassian Singer undertook the reconstruction of the church. One of the beautiful features is the Rococo portals by Josef Anton Pfaffinger.

Other things to see are the elaborate gates designed by Philipp Hinterseer in 1752. The high altar is decorated with a Madonna with Child which was completed in 1611 by Hans Waldburger. But unfortunately due to the town fire in 1818, the ceiling frescos and the high altar painting of St.Sebastian by Paul Troger was destroyed completely.
