The charming city of Salzburg is dotted with numerous Tourist Attractions and one of them is Steingasse, Salzburg. The city’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is filled with quaint churches, castles and palaces. The Steingasse, Salzburg is a medieval street located between the Kapuzinerberg hill and the Salzach River.
Salzburg is the fourth largest city in Austria and is the capital of the state of Salzburg. The city is famous as the home of the world famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The river was an important trade route for salt and the Steingasse street was the main entry point. Horse drawn carts laden with salts coming from the Hallein in the south entered through the narrow ‘Steintor’ gate. Also the street was the popular route to travel to Italy and was an important north-south medieval trading route.
Through the centuries many traditional jobs and trades were carried out in this narrow street. Due to the necessity of water, dockers, potters, dyers and tanners based their trades here. Therefore every tradesman had impressive buildings with beautiful gardens which can still be seen.
While taking a stroll down the Steingasse, Salzburg you will love watching the beautiful façades of these old buildings. The number 9 building is the birth place of Joseph Mohr who was born on 11th December 1792 and is marked with a memorial plate. He was the writer of the famous Yuletide song ‘Silent Night, Holy Night’. Just after that is a stairway which leads up to a beautiful view of this city. Halfway up the Kapuzinerberg or Imbergstiege is the beautiful St.Johann am Imberg Church which was often visited by Mozart.
After you pass through the inner ‘Steintor’ while entering the Steingasse, Salzburg you can catch a glimpse of the magnificent fortress ‘Festung Hohensalzburg’. This beautiful street is lined with shops, bars and galleries. On the other end which is now known as ‘Am Ausseren Stein’ there is a beautiful marble fountain. This fountain is known as ‘Engelwirtsbrunnen’ which was originally installed in front of ‘Engelwirt’ inn in the Steingasse, Salzburg in 1660. But from 1890 this fountain has been in the present location.
