The Weapons Collection, Vienna is one of the richest armaments collection in the country. One of the premier Vienna Tourist Attractions, the Weapons Collection in Vienna displays fabrics, textiles and costumes used in the martial expeditions. The Weapons Collection, Vienna is locally known as Waffensammlung. It is counted as one of the most frequented destinations for sightseeing in Vienna.

The inception of the Weapons Collection, Vienna owes to the contributions done by many of the eminent persons of the city. The first collectors of the armor and weapons displayed at the Weapons Collection, Vienna were Archduke Ernst of Styria in 15 th Century and Archduke Ferdinand of Tyrol during 16 th century. Eventually, this collection came up as the major collection of its type. In all the Habsburg armories were combined in 1889, the Weapons Collection, Vienna was finally set up. Later the collection was transferred from the Kunsthistorisches Museum to the Neue Burg in 1935-36 and extensive restoration went on until 1994 in the Hunt and Armor rooms.

The Weapons Collection, Vienna has many exclusive exhibits. The valuable exhibits at the Weapons Collection, Vienna include:

  • medieval helmets
  • the armor of Frederick I of the Palatinate
  • a ceremonial sword belonging to Frederick III
  • Gothic suits of armor and swords and Louis XII's crossbow, tournament armor, jousting equipment of Maximilian I

  • parade armor for Charles V, Philipp II, King Ferdinand I and Francis I
  • "Adlergarnitur" or Eagle Armor
  • armor worn by Archduke Ferdinand of Tirol
  • costumes, ceremonial weapons belonging to Maximilian II, including his golden dagger
  • richly ornamented shields and helmets
  • some superb 16th C. Ottoman weapons

Various types of fabrics such as velvets and brocades, copied in steel are also displayed in the Weapons Collection, Vienna. The Weapons Collection, Vienna remains closed om Tuesdays.
