Atashgah - the Fire Temple, Baku is also referred to as the Atashgah by the local people, which means ''place of fire''. It is also called Ateshgyakh which means ''home of fire''. This is a monastery complex and a castle-like Hindu temple that is in Surakhani, which is within close proximity to Baku. At present the complex is no longer a place of worship, but it is used as a museum. At one time the fire was fed by natural gas. There are Punjabi and Sanskrit inscriptions in the Temple. These inscriptions date from 1725 to 1873 and they prove the sanctity of the complex as a place of Sikh or Hindu worship. The local records state that the complex was built by a local Hindu trader’s community.

There was heavy exploitation of natural gas reserves in this area at the time of the Soviet Rule. This resulted in a fire that broke in the year 1969. At present the complex gets supply from a natural gas line. Many of the local legends associate this temple of Surakhani with the Zoroastrianism Fire Temples. But the structural features have got no similarity with those of the Zoroastrian place of worship.
