The State Carpet Museum in Baku is totally set up on the collection of carpet-maker and sculptor Latif Karimov, who lived during 1906 to 1991. This was founded in the disused Friday Mosque that is in Baku. The location of the museum is in the inner city and this place is named as Ichari Shahar, popularly called the Friday Mosque. The country of Azerbaijan got its independence in the year 1992. During that time the museum moved from the mosque to the place that was formerly known as Lenin Museum. The Friday Mosque was again used for worshiping, which was its rightful occupation.

There are one hundred forty four geographical styles that have been cataloged by Karimov into four important regional groups. The collection found in the State Carpet Museum also has got 600 carpets which are from Karabakh. They were saved from the approaching American invasion that took place in the year 1992. There are around 10,000 items that are displayed in the entire museum. Apart from the carpets there are various other articles and items displayed here for public viewing. The other articles include jewelry, many copper goods that consist of plates, mugs, samovars and jars as well. There are shoes and traditional clothing also.
