Juma-Mosque



Juma-Mosque, Gance is a fine example of the architectural excellence of the 17th century Azerbaijan. Juma-Mosque, Gance is one of the major Tourist Attractions in Gance which you must visit as part of your Gance Tours. Also known as the Shah Abbas Mosque, it was built in 1606 by the eminent scientist and architect Sheykh Baga-ud-din. In 1606, the mosque was under construction under the project of Sheikh Baahaddin Mahammad Amilin mosque.

History has it that the Iranian Shah Abbas I attacked Ganja and invaded it in 1606. Shah burnt out and the destroyed the city and he gave an order on the construction of a new city at 8 km to the southwest on the left side of the Ganja River. The new city was under the project of the architect Sheikh Baahaddin Mahammad Amilin. In spite of the insistence on part of the Shah on renaming the city, the people of Ganja did not accept it. And, it was constructed again under the project of the architect sheikh Baahaddin. Juma-Mosque, Gance is one of the first town constructed monuments.

Juma-Mosque, Gance consists of a prayer hall and small official rooms, adjacent to its corners. The space inside is lit by natural light through the lattices and Shebeke windows, lined in two and at places, three rows. The mosque is placed in the middle of the courtyard surrounded by indistinct walls. The walls have gates accented by vertical lines of the twin minarets. The structure is built of red bricks. The complex of the Juma-Mosque in Gance also features a madrasa or school, a bath at the west and a cemetery at the southern side of the mosque. The decoration of the mosque made use of the limestone plates, plain stone, bricks and the relief majolica.

Today, the Juma-Mosque, Gance serves to the people of Ganja. The year 2006 marked the 400th anniversary of the mosque. Standing at the center of the city, the Juma-Mosque, Gance is considered as one of the well known and most frequently visited sites in this part of Azerbaijan.
