Hamad Town

Hamad Town is also known as the Madinat Hamad. This city in northern Bahrain is one of the most famous and most frequently visited Tourist Attractions in Bahrain. Well known for its 22 roundabouts, Hamad Town is 18 km away from the capital Manama and 19 km away from the airport. You will find it nearby the Sakheer area which has the huge Bahrain International Circuit, the formula 1 motor racing circuit, the biggest circuit in the Middle East.

Hamad Town is one of the must visit sites which you cannot miss on your Bahrain Tours. What makes this place famous for tourists is the Hamad Town ancient burial mounds. These are the ancient burial mounds from the Dilmun civilization.

A Danish group opened some tumuli when they were excavating the capital city of the Bronze Age. Items dating back to around 4100 - 3700 BC were discovered. More excavation works followed unveiling many more graves which brought to light information regarding the construction and content of these graves. Each of the tumuli in Hamad Town is consists of a central stone chamber that is surrounded by a low ring wall. It is covered by earth and gravel. The mounds are of varying sizes but most of them measure 15 by 30 feet in diameter and are 3-6 feet in height. Usually, the smaller mounds feature one chamber only. The chambers are usually rectangular with one or two alcoves at the northeast end. At times, there are additional pairs of alcoves along the middle of the larger chambers.

Usually, each of the chambers contained one burial, although, some of them had several burials while the secondary chambers often had none. It has been found that the deceased were generally laying on their right side with their head in the alcove end of the chamber. The skeletons found belong to both the sexes with a life expectancy of approximately 40 years. There were few items along with the body. Among them, there were a few pieces of pottery, shell or stone stamp seals, baskets sealed with asphalt, ivory objects, stone jars and copper weapons.
