Muharraq

Muharraq, also known as Al Muharraq, is one of the major Tourist Attractions in Bahrain. Muharraq was the capital of Bahrain and has always been known as a center of religiosity. The origin of the city is ancient and dates back to the time of Dilmun approximately five thousand years ago. But, it was during the time of the Tylos when it grew to be a prominent city in the historical records. During that time, Bahrain came under domination of the Selucid Greeks and Muharraq became the center of a pagan cult dedicated to the shark god, Awal. People of Muharraq depended upon seafaring and trade for their livelihood and they worshipped Awal in the form of the statue of a shark located in the city.

Muharraq became a major center of Nestorian Christianity by the fifth century AD. The Nestorian Christianity came to dominate the southern shores of the Gulf during that time. Bahrain was a sort of a safe place for the Nestorians who were often persecuted as heretics by the Byzantine Empire. Bahrain was outside the control of the Empire. Several of the names of the villages in Muharraq reflect this Christian legacy. For example, the name ‘Al-Dair’ means 'the monastery' and ‘Qalali’ means a 'monk's cloisters'.

Today, Muharraq is one of the most visit sites while you are on your Bahrain Tours. The centre of Muharraq Governorate boasts of some of the most ancient residential properties in Bahrain. Coming here, you will find that the crowded lanes of the town are home to many buildings of historic importance and interest. Among these, some of the most well known are the Shaikh Isa bin Ali House, Siyadi House, the wind towers, the neighborhood of journalist Abdullah Al Zayed House and the impressive Arad Fort.

The Arad Fort in Muharraq is a 15th century fort. Built in a typical Arab style, the fort was used by the Omanis during their brief occupation of Bahrain in 1800. It is located close to the waterways between Bahrain Island and Muharraq. The fort has been considerably renovated and offers a brilliant sight when it is illuminated at night.
