Muharraq, also known as Al Muharraq, is one of the major Tourist Attractions in Bahrain. Muharraq was the capital of Bahrain and has always been known as a center of religiosity. The origin of the city is ancient and dates back to the time of Dilmun approximately five thousand years ago. But, it was during the time of the Tylos when it grew to be a prominent city in the historical records. Bahrain was a sort of a safe place for the Nestorians who were often persecuted as heretics by the Byzantine Empire. Bahrain was outside the control of the Empire. Several of the names of the villages in Muharraq reflect this Christian legacy. For example, the name ‘Al-Dair’ means 'the monastery' and ‘Qalali’ means a 'monk's cloisters'.

The Arad Fort in Muharraq is a 15th century fort. Built in a typical Arab style, the fort was used by the Omanis during their brief occupation of Bahrain in 1800. It is located close to the waterways between Bahrain Island and Muharraq. The fort has been considerably renovated and offers a brilliant sight when it is illuminated at night.
