Geography of Belarus



The Geography of Belarus is flat and has an average elevation of 162 meters above sea level. The country of Belarus is landlocked and borders Russia to the east and north, Poland is to the west, Ukraine is to the south, Latvia and Lithuania is to the north. The capital of Belarus is Minsk. About one third of Belarus is forested and the main industries are agriculture and manufacturing. Though Belarus has a flat terrain, the Geography of Belarus also features the Belarusian Range.

The Location of Belarus is in Eastern Europe. The Geography of Belarus is more or less the same throughout the country. This range is an elevated territory which features individual highlands running from west-southwest to east-northeast. Another feature of Belarus Geography is its highest point, Mount Dzyarzhynskaya which is 346 meters in height. The lowest point in Belarus is at 90 meters on the Neman River. The northern region of Belarus is picturesque with lakes and gently sloping ridges. About one third of the south of Belarus is covered by a low-lying swampy plain. This plain is known as the Belarusian Woodland or Palyessye.

The Climate of Belarus is temperate continental. The winter season ranges between 105 and 145 days while the summer season extends to 150 days. In January the average temperature is -6 degrees Celsius while in July the average temperature is around 18 degrees Celsius along with high humidity. The annual average precipitation ranges between 550 to 700 millimeters.

Another characteristic of the Geography of Belarus is that one third is covered by huge unpopulated forests known as pushchy. This pushchy also features a reservation containing various species of birds and animals. The north of the country is covered by conifers like birch and alder. The south is covered by deciduous forests.

One of the major features of the Landscape of Belarus is its lakes. There are over 4000 lakes and 3000 streams which are used for timber floating, power generation and shipping. Some of the major Rivers in Belarus are Zakhodnyaya Dzvina, Byarezina, Sozh, Nyoman, Prypyats' and Dnyapro. One of the features of the Geography of Belarus is its largest lake which is the eighty square kilometers Lake Narac.
