Air Access in Minsk

The city is served by Minsk International Airport, located 42 kilometers to the east of the city. Opened in 1982, the airport is mainly operated by the national carrier Belavia and the German airline Lufthansa, AirBaltic of Latvia as well as Austrian airline Austrian Airlines Group. Airport Minsk-1Minsk-1 was opened in 1933 a few kilometers to the south of the historical city center. It became an international airport in 1955 and by 1970 served over 1 million travelers a year. From 1982 it mainly served domestic routes in Belarus and short-haul destinations to Moscow, Kiev and Kaliningrad. Minsk-1 is expected to be closed in 2008 because of the noise pollution in the surrounding areas.

Situated on the junction of Warsaw-Moscow railway and Liepaja-Romny railway, Minsk is the largest transportation hub in Belarus. Suburban rail traffic from Minsk-Passazhyrski to smaller stations Minsk- Uskhodni, Minsk-Paudnyovy and Minsk-Paunochny will be started by 2020. There are three intercity bus stations, connecting Minsk with suburbs, other cities as well as the neighboring countries. Several scheduled bus routes connect it to Moscow, Vilnius, Riga, Kiev and Warsaw.

Minsk is the only city in the country having an underground metro system. Minsk metro had 25 stations and covers a distance of 33 kilometers (according to a report of 2007). Trains use 223 standard Russian metro-cars.
