The city of Vitsyebsk, often referred to as the cultural capital of Belarus, has a number of places of tourist attractions. People visit the city to see the various sites located here of historic and cultural interest. Vitsyebsk is the birthplace of Jewish painter Marc Chagall whose home has been preserved and converted into a museum. This is a place worth visiting by tourists. Another museum dedicated to the works of the painter is also there. Here exhibitions of works of persons belonging to the artist community are frequently hosted.
Then there is the National Academic Dramatic Theatre named for Yakub Kolas in the city. This is a company that has seen a lot of success and fame and has the specialty of being one of the last two professional theaters in the world performing exclusively in the Belarusian language. Tourists who do not understand Belarusian need not feel hesitant to attend a performance held here. Much of the work as directed by Artistic Director Vital Barkouski as presented here are visually striking too and can be appreciated even without understanding the language. It is the traditional works that are usually presented here.
Coming to the city during November can gift tourists with an added attraction- the International Festival of Modern Choreography. This acts as a host to dance companies from around the world.
Vitsyebsk is also the place where visitors can find the Slaviansky Bazaar- a great festival of music hailing from across the Slavic speaking areas of the world. This is hosted in a stunning amphitheater located near the center. There are other cultural events and activities that are also important constituents of the festival like exhibitions and traditional crafts.
Another tourist attraction in Vitsyebsk that is just not to be missed is the "Ratusha" (city hall). A renowned clock tower stands here. This is an example of 19th century architecture. There is also the St Varvara's Catholic Church and the church of Alexander Nevsky (on the River Dvina)- two strikingly beautiful old churches.
