The city became a crafts and trade center in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the early 16th century Gomel-Homel in Belarus became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the 17th century it became part of the Poland and in 1772 the city was annexed by Imperial Russia. At the end of the 18th century the wooden fortress was replaced by a palace by Count Rumyancev.
The Germans occupied the city during World War II from 1941 to 1943. The city is home to a number of industries like agricultural machinery, fertilizer, and processed food and forest products.
