Founded in 1168 AD Hrodna, Belarus is the capital of Hrodna Voblast in Belarus. Although it is a modern city today but it owes its origin to a medieval fortified town on the banks of Neman River. The modern city of Hrodna in Belarus was founded as small citadel and a fortified trading center retained by the Rurikid princes along with the lands of the Baltic tribal Yotvingians. The name of the city came from the Old East Slavic verb 'gorodit'. It means 'to enclose' and indeed the old town of Hrodna was enclosed by thick walls.
