Mahilyow, Belarus was an important hub in the east-west and north-south trading routes. King Stefan Batory granted Mahilyow, Belarus city rights in 1577. When Poland was partitioned and Imperial Russia came to power Mahilyow became the center of Mogilev guberniya. During World War I from 1915 to 1917 the city served as the Russian army's headquarters. The Russian king Tsar Nicholas II stayed here as Commander-in-Chief. The city was occupied by the Germans in 1918 and became part of the Belarusian People's Republic. Later in 1919 Mahilyow in Belarus was again taken over by the Bolshevist Russia forces and became part of Byelorussian SSR. From 1941 to 1944 the city remained under German hands.
