The city of Mahilyow, Belarus is located in eastern Belarus. From Russia's Smolensk border Mahilyow is 76 kilometers and from the border of Russia's Bryansk oblast it is 105 kilometers. This Belarus Tourist Destination is the third largest city in Belarus and is in the center of the province. It is easily accessible from all over Belarus. In 1267 the city was founded. The city was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the 14th century. After the Union of Lublin and the creation of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Mahilyow, Belarus was transferred to The Crown as Mohylew or Mogilew.

Mahilyow, Belarus was an important hub in the east-west and north-south trading routes. King Stefan Batory granted Mahilyow, Belarus city rights in 1577. When Poland was partitioned and Imperial Russia came to power Mahilyow became the center of Mogilev guberniya. During World War I from 1915 to 1917 the city served as the Russian army's headquarters. The Russian king Tsar Nicholas II stayed here as Commander-in-Chief. The city was occupied by the Germans in 1918 and became part of the Belarusian People's Republic. Later in 1919 Mahilyow in Belarus was again taken over by the Bolshevist Russia forces and became part of Byelorussian SSR. From 1941 to 1944 the city remained under German hands.

This six pillared cathedral was built between 1738 and 1752 and features a gorgeous Baroque architectural style with murals.
