Navahradak, Belarus is a city in western Belarus. It is situated on the Belarussian Upland, in the Hrodna district, 50 km north-west of Baranovichy. Navahradak, Belarus, approximately has 30 thousand residents.
Navahradak, Belarus was the capital of the independent Ruthenian Duchy in the 16th century. In the 18th century it was incorporated in Latvia. Navahradak was the place of baptism and coronation of Mendog (1251). In 1795 it was incorporated in Russia.
In the First World War, it was occupied by Germany from 1915 to 1918. After the end of the war it belonged to the Belarus National Republic but the Second Polish Republic occupied it in 1919. Later on the Red Army occupied it during the Polish-Bolshevik war. Navahradak was taken back by Poland due to the treaty of Riga; Navahradak became part of Poland and capital of the Nowogródek voivodship. The Soviet Union recaptured it in July 1944.
Navahradak, Belarus played the role of a provincial capital in the inter-war period within the borders of Poland. In 1939 it was seized by the USSR and from 1991 it became the territory of independent Belarus. Within the territory of Navahrudak are laid the shortest transport communications connecting the CIS countries with the states of West Europe. Belarus shares its border with Poland, the Baltic States, Russia and Ukraine.
