History of Orsha, Belarus

Orsha was fortified around 1021 where it was held as one of the outposts of the Polotsk land. It became a Vitebsk principality around the 12th century. In 1320 it joined under the Duchy of Lithuania. The 16th century saw it getting embroiled in various battles when the town was burnt and built more than once. The town became a state property from 1560 onwards.
