History of Pinsk, Belarus

The history of Pinsk is closely related to the history of Turov since till the 12th century it was principally the center of Sviatopolk's descendants of Turov. In the 1320 the seat of Pinsk was won by the Navahrudak rulers who later incorporated it into their larger territory. This was known as the grand Duchy of Lithuania. Catholicism was prominent in the place. The first secondary school which was the brotherhood school was established here in 1633. It was captured during the Cossack rebellion who carried atrocities against the local Jewish population. The town was also burnt later by the Russians. In 1706 it fell under the possession of Charles XII who again burnt the town. However the town was proof against all destruction and decay which is evident in its continuous recovery through the adverse times including the holocaust seen during the World Wars.
