Bridges in Belize

Bridges in Belize are worth a visit by the guests and the visitors touring the place. There are three main Bridges in Belize that are well connected throughout the entire city.

Information on Belize City

Belize City is the largest city of the Central American nation Belize. It is also the capital of the Belize District. The city was almost entirely destroyed in 1961 when Hurricane Hattie swept ashore on Halloween. It was the capital of British Honduras as Belize was then named until the government was moved to the new capital of Belmopan in 1970.

Information on Bridges in Belize

Almost all the parts of the city are connected by three bridges. The three Bridges are the Swing Bridge which is situated at Market Square and North Front Street; the Belchina Bascule Bridge located at the Douglas Jones Street and Youth for the Future Drive junction, and the Belcan Bridge connecting the Central American Boulevard and the Roundabout which is leading to the Northern Highway and Caribbean Shores. There are numerous smaller bridges that link individual streets.

There are canals in the city of Belize. The three main canals that are running in Belize City are Haulover Creek, Burdon Canal and Collet Canal. All of the canals run through the Southside.

Bridges in Belize: The Swing Bridge

The Swing Bridge was built in 1923. The Belize Swing Bridge connects Belize City's south and north sides and is the only physically controlled Swing Bridge in the world. Every morning and evening, bridge operators turn around the bridge just long enough to let the tall boats pass along Haulover Creek halting city traffic. Linking Belize City's north and south sides, the Swing Bridge is the only manually operated swing bridge in the world. The bridge is swung every morning and evening to allow sailboats and other large boats to pass through the river.
