Culture of Belize




Before knowing about the culture of Belize, one should have thorough idea of the history of Belize. Belize was known to be a British colony for more than a century and became an independent nation in 1981. The historical country is located in Central America and recognized as the only English speaking country in the region. Belize comprises of rich and diverse culture which represents an interesting mix of Kriol, Maya, Garinagu, Mestizo and Mennonites communities. The culture of Belize is unique and features a long and violent history.

Communities

The country is home to a large number of mixed communities. The first and foremost are the Mayans who have advanced ancient civilization. Mayans come with three distinct groups which include the Yucatec, Mopan, and Kekchi Mayas. Mestizos are the second largest community living in the country covering almost 48 percent of the entire population. Another major ethnic group is the Creoles. Apart from these ancient communities, the other smaller groups that have played a huge role in growth and progression of the country are Garifuna, the Chinese, East Indians, and Mennonites.

Language

Although a huge concentration of various cultures and communities, the official language of the country remains English. The second most important language is Spanish. One can also hear some other main languages like Mayan, Chinese, Mennonite German, Lebanese, Arabic, Hindi and Garifuna. Majority of Belize culture comprises of Catholicism since most of the population is Roman Catholic.

Cuisine

The cuisine in Belize is widely popular among the locals as well as tourists. The Belizeans generally prefer homemade delicacies for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The main meal comprises of light food, dominated by beans, cheese, meat and salad. Various kinds of soups are favorite of the local people and other people from rural areas like to eat corn, seafood, cassava and vegetable.

Social Life

Belizeans are friendly and like to socialize occasionally. They greet each other at various places and love to make strong bonding and relationships with others. Marriages are celebrated with a bash. Receptions, parties, music, dance and great food are integral parts of marriages.

Music

Belizeans are very fond of music and it is an important part of many social occasions and festivals. reggae, calypso and merengue are the most popular international music while the popular Belizean style music and dance is the Brukdown. National Holidays

  • "Boxing Day" on 26 December
